Glowing versus reflective

Reflective material needs something to shine at it. On a lit street with traffic, that works. Away from streetlights it does nothing at all, because there is no light to bounce back.

A glowing collar makes its own light. That is what you want on a footpath, in woodland, or across a dark field — the situations where you actually lose sight of a dog.

Which colour to pick

Most of it is a matter of taste, with two exceptions worth knowing. Green and white read as brightest to the human eye in low light, so they are the easiest to pick out at distance. Red is the least visible of the set, but it is also the least likely to be mistaken for a bike light.

Worth being clear about

A lit collar makes your dog easier to see. It does not replace a lead near roads, and it does not make them visible through a hedge or over a rise. Treat it as one layer of safety on a dark walk, not the whole of it.
