The half-metre of floor just inside the back door takes the worst of a British winter. This mat sits there and absorbs it — water and mud come off the paws before they reach the hallway, and the whole thing goes in the machine when it has had enough.

Bigger is better here. A dog that clears the mat in one stride has not wiped anything, so pick a size they have to walk across rather than over.

Care

Shake it out regularly and machine wash cool. Avoid fabric softener — it coats the fibres and reduces how much water they take up. Line dry rather than tumbling on high, which is kinder to the non-slip backing.
