Sniffing is genuinely tiring for a dog — mentally more than physically. That is why a foraging toy is worth reaching for on the days when a proper walk is not happening.

Pick your size

Take the larger one if you are unsure. A ball a dog can pick up whole and carry off is less interesting than one they have to work at on the floor.

How to start

Make it easy at first. Rest a few treats on the outside where your dog can see and smell them, so they learn the ball produces food. Only once they are confident should you push treats down into the middle.

Dry treats or kibble work best. Anything greasy soaks into the fabric and is unpleasant to wash out.

When it earns its keep

Rainy days when the walk gets cut short. The hour before you go out. Firework evenings, when a dog with something absorbing to do settles better than one listening to the window.

Safety

Supervise a dog who chews rather than forages. Fabric strips are for nosing through, not for shredding, and a determined chewer can pull pieces loose. Check it over regularly and retire it once strips start coming away.
