Choosing a size

Go by your dog's weight using the list above, and check the fit once it is on: snug all the way round, but you should still be able to slide a flat hand underneath. If your dog is between two sizes, or is deep-chested, take the larger.

What to expect — and what not to

Pressure wraps help some dogs and do nothing for others; the research is mixed and there is no way to know in advance which camp your dog is in. Treat it as one thing to try alongside the rest — a quiet room, curtains drawn, background noise — rather than a fix on its own.

Introduce it on a calm ordinary day with treats, not for the first time on Bonfire Night. A dog that first meets the vest in the middle of what frightens it will associate the vest with the fear.

If your dog genuinely panics at noise — hiding, shaking, refusing food, hurting itself trying to escape — that is worth a conversation with your vet. They can talk you through desensitisation programmes and, where it is warranted, medication. A vest is not a substitute for that.
