Starting your dog off

Do not fill it and hand it over. That is how puzzle toys end up in a cupboard.

Start with every compartment open and treats in plain sight, so your dog learns the board is worth investigating. Then cover one. Then two. Build up over a few sessions until they are solving the whole thing. A dog who fails on the first attempt often will not come back to it.

Who it suits

Dogs who finish a bowl in twenty seconds, dogs left alone for a few hours, and dogs on restricted exercise after an injury. A puzzle board gives a dog something to do with their brain when their legs are not an option.

It also works as a slow feeder — put part of a meal in rather than treats, and dinner takes fifteen minutes instead of thirty seconds.

Worth knowing

This is a puzzle, not a chew toy. Supervise a dog who is inclined to pick things up and destroy them, and put it away between sessions — both for the toy's sake and because a puzzle that is always available stops being interesting.
