Why three openings matter with more than one cat

A tunnel with two ends is a dead end when another cat comes in the other way. Cats who are not entirely comfortable with each other avoid anywhere they might get cornered — which is why a two-way tunnel often goes unused in a multi-cat house while a three-way one gets used constantly.

Getting a cat to use it

Do not put your cat in it. Put the tunnel down, walk away, and let them investigate on their own — that usually takes a day or two. A treat at the far end or a wand toy pulled through speeds it up considerably.
